‘Understanding success and the evaluation of equity initiatives from the perspective of students from refugee backgrounds and other stakeholders in refugee education’
MYAN AND UNSW are looking for students from refugee backgrounds to participate as co-researchers in a participatory research study.
What’s this study about?
This study explores how students from refugee backgrounds and university staff members who support and advocate for these students defi ne success and how it can be evaluated in higher education.
What is the purpose of this research?
This research is being done to better understand how universities can design and evaluate their equity practice in a way that considers the outcomes of success that students from refugee backgrounds think are important.
Who is undertaking this research?
This research forms part of Tim McLennan’s PhD project at UNSW, supervised by Dr Rose Amazan (UNSW) and Associate Professor Sally Baker (ANU).
What are the criteria to participate as a co-researcher?
Essential:
- Identify as having a refugee or refugee-like background (regardless of visa status)
- Currently enrolled in undergraduate study at an Australian public university
- Were born outside of Australia
- Aged 18 years and older
- Live in Sydney or Armidale (NSW)
Preference will also be given to students that are members of the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network (MYAN), however, this is not essential for inclusion in the study.
What’s involved in this participatory research study?
Participation in this study as a student co-researcher will involve a time commitment of approximately seven hours, spread across 8-10 months. If you decide to take part, this will involve participation in the following activities:
• Two Collaborative (CoLab) workshops (1.5 hours each) = 3 hours
• Review of transcripts and themes from CoLab one = 1 hour
• Focus group 1 = 1 hour
• Review of transcripts and themes/co-designed resources from CoLab two = 1 hour
• Focus group 2 = 1 hour
What’s in it for me?
By participating in this research, you will have an opportunity to co-design resources that can be used by universities to better support students from refugee backgrounds. Student co-researchers will receive an honorary payment of $30/hour for participating in 7 hours of research activities, spread out over a few months. They will also be compensated for travel to in-person workshops ($17.80). Catering will also be provided.

Participation in this research is voluntary and confidential and you can choose to withdraw at any time. This research has the approval of the Human Research Ethics Committee at the University of NSW (iRECS6017).
