Australia's Multicultural Statement released
The Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network Australia (MYAN) welcomes Multicultural Australia: United, Strong, Successful - the Federal Government’s first policy statement on multiculturalism since 2011, released today.
“We commend the government’s renewed commitment to multiculturalism. This statement reflects a positive approach to fostering a socially cohesive, culturally diverse Australia.” said MYAN Chair Carmel Guerra.
We applaud the policy statement denouncing racial hatred and discrimination as incompatible with Australian society.
Multiculturalism is a central tenet of Australian national identity and is a valuable asset to the country in an era of globalisation. As Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says: ‘Australia is one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world’.
“For young people, political leadership around a multicultural Australia is particularly important, especially in relation to celebrating cultural diversity as a strength and condemning racism and discrimination”, said MYAN National Coordinator Nadine Liddy.
We look forward to working with Government to put the new policy statement into practice and ensure that all young people feel like they belong and can contribute to a diverse, multicultural Australia.
MYAN is the national peak body on multicultural youth – Australia’s national voice representing the needs and interests of young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.
