Final meeting of the Education Pathways Teleconference

8th November 2018

Hello members of the Education Pathways Teleconference,

Since the group first started to convene in 2015, we have had numerous meetings and had important achievements with your important contributions and commitment to this group. After numerous discussions this year among ourselves as MYAN and RCOA and with the Refugee Education SIG, we have decided to cease this group as of end of 2018.

The work of the Refugee Education SIG will continue in the coming year and we will continue to support SIG's work for increasing access to students from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds to education.

We would like to thank you all for your participation into this group and invite you to the final teleconference of the group next week.

In this final teleconference, we will have a look at what has been achieved so far in access to education by young people on temporary visas in Australia and what more can be done in this field.

Our speaker will be;

- Dr Rachel Burke from the University of New Castle

Dr Burke will talk about the research 'People Seeking Asylum: Access and Support in Higher Education' which she has been involved in as a co-investigator with

Background

Young people seeking asylum, and those on Temporary Protection Visas (TPV) or Safe Haven Enterprise Visas (SHEV), face a range of barriers to accessing and remaining engaged in education and training pathways. While engagement in education has a significant impact on a young person's mental and physical health and their sense of purpose and participation in the community, their options are limited once they turn 18. Addressing this often relies on individual advocacy and creative solutions.

This teleconference provides an opportunity for:
  • Networking between workers and agencies supporting young asylum seekers and young refugees on TPVs or SHEVs across Australia
  • Sharing and promoting initiatives that support young people to continue engaging in education/training opportunities beyond the age of 18
  • Identifying any future advocacy priorities or opportunities.
