2:00 to 3:00pm (AEDT) Tuesday 14th November 2017

Thank you to everyone who has already confirmed they will be dialing in. MYAN Australia and SCOA welcome you to join this second national teleconference on refugee and migrant youth employment.

In the first teleconference (October 2017), participants identified the key issues and trends impacting the transition to employment for young Australians from a refugee and migrant background. Notes are available here.

In this teleconference we will explore programs and supports that are assisting young Australians from a refugee and migrant backgrounds to transition into employment and look at any areas of unmet need.

Background
MYAN Australia are preparing a paper that will provide a national overview of youth employment with a specific focus on young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. This paper will identify the key issues and trends impacting the transition to employment for this group of young Australians. We also know there is a some great work being done in this area across Australia that should be highlighted.

SCoA has recently completed a series of Forums across Australia which explored the foundations of economic engagement and the transition to employment for newly arrived migrants and refugees. These forums highlighted the hard work of the settlement sector in assisting migrants and refugees in their economic pursuits including a number of dynamic, innovative and sophisticated services and programs which specifically address one or more of the foundations of economic engagement. Equally obvious though were the significant barriers that continue to impact on economic engagement and the need for ongoing collaboration across the country on this crucial issue.

This teleconference will help inform our ongoing policy and advocacy work. It is also an opportunity to share the work you are doing in this area and to identify areas of unmet need.
