Staying safe this winter: How to talk about COVID-19, Vaccination and Boosters with your community?

MYAN is hosting an information session for disabled young people from diverse backgrounds who want to better equip themselves to talk about COVID-19, Vaccination and Boosters with their friends, family and community. At MYAN, we believe that young people have the power to influence and support the broader community to stay safe and protected from COVID-19.

We want to ensure that disabled young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds are able to equip themselves with the latest, most accurate information to promote and advocate for the community’s health.

Come along for a discussion with peers and a health professional about:

  1. Why do we still need to talk about COVID-19 and encourage vaccination?
  2. What are some of the myths, facts and FAQs about COVID-19 Vaccination?
  3. Resources for CALD communities – making COVID-19 information accessible to all.

Staying safe this winter

Did You Know ? COVID-19 Vaccination

Just as it was important 4 years ago, Covid-19 vaccination continues to be vital for everyone from preventing risks of severe COVID-19 symptoms. If you have already been vaccinated from a few years ago, the protection that the vaccination serves reduces overtime. Vaccination is important for those who are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 since it can help to prevent hospitalisation or death. Immunisation isn’t only to support your own health and wellbeing, bit it is also to protect those in our community who are most vulnerable such as our immunocompromised peers or elderly family members.

Why should I get a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose? Find out in your language: https://www.healthtranslations.vic.gov.au/resources/covid-19-vaccination-why-should-i-get-a-covid-19-vaccine-booster-dose

What COVID-19 Vaccines are available in Australia?

The Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia has approved the following XBB 1.5 vaccines for use as primary and additional doses:

  • Pfizer monovalent Omicron XBB.1.5 vaccine 5 – <12 years formulation (light blue cap)
  • Pfizer monovalent Omicron XBB.1.5 vaccine ≥12 years formulation (dark grey cap)
  • Moderna monovalent Omicron XBB.1.5 vaccine, registered for use in people aged 12 years and older.

Why is it important to stay keep-up your COVID-19 vaccination?

  1. Preventing severe illness: Vaccines are your best protection against severe illness, hospitalisation, and death from COVID-19.
  2. Protection for everyone: Vaccinations are particularly important for those aged 75 years and over or those with severe immunocompromise that increase their risk of severe COVID-19.
  3. Keeping your guard up: Protection from COVID-19 wanes over time. Regular vaccinations, tailored to your age and health needs, ensure ongoing protection.

Over time, our bodies decrease the number of antibodies it creates to fight the COVID-19 virus. This is why it is important to get booster doses in order to trigger your body to make new antibodies as well as protect us against new COVID-19 variants.
